Seedlings: November 18, 2025

We kicked things off with free play in the backyard, and the tiny hill quickly became the place to be. It was really sweet watching the older kids take the younger ones under their wing, giving them sled rides, checking in on them, and helping them feel confident. A few adventurous kids decided to try standing in the sleds. They also came up with their own little system for lining up, sharing the sleds, and taking turns. Lots of great teamwork without me needing to say much at all.

Stories in the Dome

Snack time in the dome felt extra cozy. I read Runaway Belly Button which always cracks us up. I showed them my favourite page with Belly Button’s ridiculous face. They also pointed out a few of their favourite pictures. Then we read Big Tracks Little Tracks: Following Animal Prints which came in pretty handy later on.

Tracks at the Flats

Once we got down to the flats, we started spotting tracks right away. The kids had all sorts of guesses about who they belonged to. We checked out the river too and talked about how different it looked from last week. A little snow and a little melting can really change things.

One child had brought a shovel and was busy clearing the path along the dyke. The shovel slipped and fell into the water which turned into an unexpected learning moment. We talked about why we don’t lean forward over the river to grab something and instead used our problem solving. How fast was the shovel moving. Which direction was it drifting. Where would it wash up. They followed its slow little journey and managed to retrieve it without any trouble.

Hot Chocolate by the Fire

Back at Heron Tree Estates we all worked together to get the fire going again. The kids asked for hot chocolate, so we made a batch and warmed up. I read Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate How Animals Keep Warm while we sipped and relaxed.

Heading Home

After everything was cleaned up, the kids grabbed their gear and hopped onto the tire “bus” to wait for pickup.

Thanks for a great day, Seedlings!
