Raking and Reading
The kids arrived knowing how important it is to leave leaves on the ground for overwintering critters, but some of the yard needed a tidy, so they jumped right in to help with raking. The sky started to get drizzly, so out came the umbrellas as we cozied up to read our letter from Finny. She had lots to say about birds and migration, which led nicely into our story about how birds find their way. The kids had great guesses about what they use to navigate
Feeding Our Feathered Friends
Everyone was excited to help feed the birds. We put out seed and placed a few peanuts in a special spot where we’d be able to see them right from the dome door. Once we settled in for snack, our plan paid off. Blue jays swooped in close for their treats, and we also spotted chickadees, sparrows, cardinals, chipmunks, and squirrels visiting the feeders.
Exploring the Flats
After snack we suited back up and headed down to the flats. The kids were quick to climb trees, play in their forts, and check in on our duck friends swimming along the river.
Building a Lunch Room
Back in the dome for lunch, the kids had an idea to create a special place to eat. They used the foam puzzle mats to build a whole room, starting with the floor and lifting the sides up piece by piece. It took time and teamwork, but they were so proud when it was finished. They ate together inside their creation while we listened to stories and the steady patter of rain on the dome.
Games and Creativity
After lunch some helpers swept up crumbs, then we tried a game called Hoot Owl Hoot. We didn’t get all the owls home before sunrise, but everyone handled it with easy spirits and helped clean up the game. They moved on to colouring for a bit, and eventually we brought out the whiteboard for our own version of pictionary. Animals, insects, and weather were the big themes, and the guesses were enthusiastic.
Park Play
Before long it was time to pack up and head to the park for a final stretch of play before home time.
Thanks for a great day Seedlings!
