Letters from Finny

We opened our morning with a letter from Finny the Fairy, wishing the girls a Happy Autumn. Finny reminded them that the Fall Equinox is a special time for fairies to gather in community, harvest, and give thanks to Mother Earth. To bring the lesson to life, the girls pretended to be the Sun while I tilted the “Earth” back and forth to show how day and night become equal at this time of year.

Feeding Our Friends

Each Earthkeeper received a handful of seeds to share with the birds and chipmunks. One girl cleverly covered her seeds with a leaf “to keep them dry from the drizzle”—a beautiful example of observation and problem-solving. We practiced sitting still and quietly watching the feeders, and were delighted when our chipmunk friends appeared almost right away!

Fairy Doors and Leaf Crowns

At the playground, one Wildflower proudly showed the others the fairy door in the Witch Tree. Another noticed it was dirty and carefully cleaned it, leaving offerings for the fairy inside. Meanwhile, others gathered leaves for crowns and discovered some with mysterious bumps—an impromptu investigation that sparked their curiosity.

Honoring the Harvest

Down at the Flats, we collected flowers and plants while practicing gratitude. Every time something was foraged, the sound of “thank you” filled the air. Their respect for the land and joy in harvesting was heartwarming. Just as we were about to leave, a sharp-eyed Earthkeeper spotted a hoppy friend—a toad!

Lily the Toad

Quickly and gently, the girls created a home for the toad, later named Lily (“because toads hop on lilypads”). Shells became a pool and water dish, and flowers provided hiding spots.

Natural Creations

Back at Heron Tree Estates, some Wildflowers experimented with natural paints. One girl revealed the trick of using a white crayon first to make the colours “magically appear” on paper. Others wove nature crowns or added offerings to the toad’s home. It was beautiful to see the way ideas were shared and each girl had the chance to be the teacher.

Imaginative Play

After lunch and stories, the costume bin came out, and a lively game began. A butterfly declared two chipmunks her “adopted children,” reflecting the girls’ own thoughts and experiences in their play. Lily the Toad even joined in, becoming a “pet” in their storyline. The girls pulled out a field guide to learn what she might eat, then devised a plan: diggers, worm-catchers, and spotters working as a team to test their hypothesis—“If Lily eats the worm, we’ll know she’s that kind of toad!”

Pancakes and Songs

As the afternoon drew to a close, the girls reminded me of what has apparently become a tradition—food and fire. They pleaded for “the best pancakes ever,” and I happily obliged. With pancakes on their plates and a song in the air, we wrapped up another magical time together.

Thanks for a great day Wildflowers!
