Settling In

It felt so good to see everyone back today. Right from the start, the kids jumped into play—some headed to the mud kitchen where they used recipe cards to make “soup,” while others got creative balancing on loose parts and testing out what their bodies could do.

Gathering Circle & Fire

Once the morning energy had settled, we gathered in a circle and decided it was the perfect day for a fire. Pancakes were on the menu (with a few marshmallows sneaking in, too!). One child discovered loose bark on the log he was sitting on, and underneath was soft, wispy bark that turned out to be excellent tinder. That sparked a great conversation about what fire needs—tinder, oxygen, fuel, and care.

Free Play & Creations

After a filling start, some of the kids got busy with hammer and nails, building with extra wood. Others drifted into free play: a lively dance party, taking the “train” made of tires, and painting. At one point, a child asked to do “morning rectangle”—a funny little tradition from last year that started when we gathered at the picnic table instead of the log circle. He proudly shared a coin from home, pointing out the Statue of Liberty and sparking a group conversation about travel and places they’ve visited.

Playground Adventures

Before long we headed to the playground, checking the outdoor thermometer on the way and chatting about the weather. At the park, Banana Tag was the game of choice, and I sat with one child to show her the “C” chord on the ukulele.

Stories at Lunch

Back at the house for lunch, we enjoyed two read-alouds: When You Go Into Nature and Chickadee Criminal Mastermind.

Exploring the Flats

In the afternoon, we wandered to the Flats where the kids came across a dead mouse on the trail. They observed closely, asked thoughtful questions, and shared theories about what might have happened. By the river, they caught minnows, climbed trees, skipped stones, and even spotted an osprey flying past. A toad made an appearance too—caught gently, admired, then released to swim along the bank. The sight sparked wonder and respect for these small creatures, and one child even shared a story about seeing a hawk carry off a squirrel.

Operation Clean Up

As the day wound down, clean-up became a game thanks to one clever idea: “Operation Clean Up.” With pretend walkie-talkies in hand, the kids became police officers on secret missions to restore the yard. They tackled the challenge with joy and teamwork.

Tribute to Autumn

We ended at the playground where one Earthkeeper announced he was making a “Tribute to Autumn”—a repeating pattern of rock, leaf, rock, leaf. A small but beautiful reminder of the changing season and the creativity children bring when given the space.

Thanks for a great day Sprouts!
