Sprouts: April 24th

After a few absences last week, we were so happy to have all our Earthkeepers back together again! A bright, sunny day greeted us — and the sunshine definitely matched the energy and excitement buzzing in the air.

When we gathered at Heron Tree Estates, we found a tiny surprise in our yard: a short letter from our fairy friend Finny! She let us know that some new neighbours had just moved in. Who could they be? We set off wondering... (hint: they’re very small, very magical, and they might live in two little houses tucked away in the garden).

We grabbed our gear and headed out for adventure — across Blackfriars Bridge and down Cardinal Hill to Sunshine Field. Once there, we took advantage of the big grassy field and played a game. Each child chose a bird to become — our flock included chickadees, cardinals, geese, ducks, blue jays, and even a turkey vulture. We imagined what foods our birds might be looking for: seeds, worms, or carrion? And then the search began — for walnuts hidden in the grass.

This time, we added a twist: relay-style play. One bird stayed behind to protect the nest and eggs while their partner flew off to gather food, one piece at a time. It was a fun challenge and changed how we strategized — balancing teamwork, patience, and care for the nest.

We found some shade to rest and recharge with snack, laying out blankets in the cool grass. Stef began reading Twig Friends by Cynthia Bardes (a sweet story about imagination, friendship, and connection with nature). Then it was time to head back.

On our way, we passed a blooming patch of wildflowers — and remembering the Honorable Harvest, we picked a few with intention and care. Back at Heron Tree Estates, the afternoon unfolded with peaceful, playful energy:

  • Some Earthkeepers got to work baking up a storm in the mud kitchen.

  • A few found cozy corners in the hammock to read stories together.

  • Others sculpted colourful Skinks out of plasticine — a callback to our story Stewie the Skink.

Before lunch, we read Me and My Sit Spot, then chose special places in the yard that each child will return to over the coming weeks. What will they notice changing in their spot? New growth? Visiting bugs? Shifting shadows? Stef has the inside scoop and strategically marked spots that will look different in no time!

In the afternoon, we ventured out again — this time to The Flats, where - under Garth’s watchful eye - we waded in the cool, shallow water under the bridge. It was the perfect way to escape the heat. Some Earthkeepers tossed rocks (taking extra care with big ones!), while others worked together to build their own mini “pool.”

Back at home base, we created our Snapshot of the Day to capture the memories.

And in closing circle, we tried two new things:

  1. Each of us shared something we were grateful for about another Earthkeeper — kind words that filled the space with warmth.

  2. Stef brought out her ukulele, and we sang together to end our day in harmony.

Another beautiful day of sunshine, stories, and growing connection — with the land, with each other, and with ourselves.

Thanks for a great day Earthkeepers!
