A Story to Start Our Day

We gathered together and began with a story; There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. It’s a favourite around here, and l sing it often! I asked the children if they noticed how the book and the song are a little different. What does the woman swallow in my version that she doesn’t in the book?

Harvest Time

Since the fall equinox, we’ve been noticing how the season is changing. Cooler air, golden leaves, shorter days. This time of year is known for harvesting, and we did some of our own! The children collected peppers, tomatoes, and raspberries from the garden. There’s something so special about gathering food straight from the plants we’ve cared for.

Where Are the Birds?

We filled the feeders and scattered seed for the birds, but none came by today. The children wondered why. What was different about today compared to the other weeks?

Exploring the Flats

After snack, we set off for a walk to the Flats. The kids had a blast climbing up the dyke and sliding down. Down by the river, we spotted a great blue heron. Its loud, croaky call caught everyone’s attention! We watched quietly as it fished in the shallows.

Some children splashed in the river, tossed rocks, and leapt from stone to stone, while others invented an imaginary game involving a hidden lair in “the dark river where everyone is too scared to go.”

Dancing and Pretend Play

Back at the house for lunch, I turned on some soft music, imagining a calm, restful moment. Instead, one child began to dance, and soon everyone joined in! It turned into an impromptu dance party full of laughter and movement.

After lunch came free play. The garden harvest inspired a new round of culinary creations: onion soup, vegetable pizza, and “nuggets with sauce.” Tomatoes and peppers were cut, mashed, stirred, and proudly served. Chalk was also smashed, ground, and mixed into colourful “recipes.”

Fire and Friendship

As the day slowed down, a small fire crackled to life. The children experimented with adding leaves and sticks, watching how they burned and turned to ash. Around them, others swung on the rope swing or cozied up in the hammock for a giggle-filled rest.

A Rainy Ending

We finished the day at the playground, where a lively game of tag broke out just as the rain began to drizzle. Wet hair, muddy clothes, bright smiles — a perfect autumn afternoon.

Thanks for a great day Seedlings!
